1998 Marques Y Murrieta Ygay Reserva

A favorite tempranillo/grenache blend of mine for some time.  I first tasted this wine in Barcelona at a restaurant called El Asador which specializes in very young spring lamb.  The smoky, earthy edge made for a classic pairing.

1999 Domaine Leflaive Blagny 1er Cru Sous Le Dos D’ane

Importers Wilson Daniels

This red burgundy from the famous Leflaive estate, not to be confused with Olivier Leflaive, is drinking very well.  As a fan of pinot noir this wine delivers for the money.
This medium bodied effort sports a medium depth red cherry color.  The bouquet is loaded with wild berry and cherry aromas laced by a bit of vanilla and oak.  The acidity is balanced and the wine continues to display good fruit.  A long finish for a red burgundy from a prestigious house with a price tag of under $50.00 is a real gem of a find.  This wine will accompany roast birds or grilled meats marvelously.

1995 Balgera Valtellina Sforzato

Nebbiolo grapes are partially dried to create an Amarone style wine.  This grape is known locally as Chiavennesca and is characteristically deep blood red in color, exhibits a strong nose and aromas of dates, black cherries, black figs and overripe plums.  This wine has a velvety, plush feel in the mouth with a bonus of a long finish.  This is an unusual wine, in the price range of $55.00, and difficult to locate for purchase.  If this is your kind of thing, I would order at least half a case for occasions of roasted meats and game.

Bollinger Special Cuvee

Special Cuvee means non-vintage, but in 1911 William Folks thought this designation an insult.  The blend is classic, pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot meunier combining to create delicate bubbles and a slightly toasted flavor.  Spiced apple or baked pear rounds out the flavor profile of 007’s preferred bubbly.  This champagne is full-bodied, well worth the $40.00 price tag. I would drink it with fried chicken, or down it with a bucket of kumamoto oysters anytime.
